Government of Ontario Approves New Policy on Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves

In the last few weeks, TIAO submitted comments related to the inclusion of a policy that the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) was designing concerning environmental protections for parks and conservation areas. This was known as the Project Evaluation Policy (PEP) under the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act, 2006 (PPCRA).  The environmental protections currently under the law will remain in place and the Ministry will continue to oversee all decisions related to provincial parks and conservation reserves informed by the PEP. This is meant to identify project types that are subject to evaluation, management, planning considerations, efficient evaluation processes, and more. This does not affect the government’s legal obligations concerning consultations with Indigenous communities.
