TIAO Signs Industry Letter to the Prime Minister: Canada's Tourism Sector United on International Convention Attraction Fund

This month, TIAO joined a broad coalition of national tourism, hospitality, aviation, and business events leaders in co-signing an open letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney, calling on the federal government to renew the International Convention Attraction Fund (ICAF), which is set to expire in March 2026. This puts Canada’s ability to compete for high-value international business events at risk.

ICAF has proven to be a highly effective, productivity-enhancing investment. Since its launch, the program has delivered a 22-to-1 return, helping Canadian cities secure major international conferences that generate significant economic activity, tax revenue, and global exposure for Canadian innovation. These events support key sectors such as advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, life sciences, finance, and agribusiness—sectors that are central to Canada’s economic growth and trade diversification goals.

TIAO has consistently raised the importance of business events competitiveness with federal decision-makers, emphasizing that international conferences are planned years in advance and that Canada is competing against destinations offering substantial bid support. Without renewed federal investment, Canadian destinations risk losing future opportunities that support jobs, private-sector investment, and long-term economic resilience.

TIAO looks forward to working with the federal government and industry partners to secure renewed funding for ICAF and strengthen Canada’s position in the global business events market.
