HURRY! NOMINATIONS CLOSE AUGUST 31 FOR THE 2021 ONTARIO TOURISM RESILIENCY AWARDS
TIAO in partnership with Attractions Ontario, The Culinary Tourism Alliance, Indigenous Tourism Ontario and OTEC is pleased to announce the opening of nominations for the 2021 Ontario Tourism Resiliency Awards.
2020 was a year like no other, requiring determination and perseverance. In a year fraught with innumerable operating obstacles, exceptional tourism businesses rose to the challenge and continued to innovate and engage with partners and their communities, even when unable to open for regular business. A year that was so very different for the tourism industry calls for an award reflective of the times: an award that fairly recognizes the achievements of tourism businesses regardless of operating status.
The 2021 Ontario Tourism Resiliency Awards are unique to this year and have been designed to reflect resiliency through innovation, collaboration and partnership. Our partners have joined together this year in collaboration to present this year's awards. The trophy will reflect this collaboration or partnership while embracing our unique role within our industry. Partners working together, like that of the ribbons of a DNA helix. Because Resiliency is in our Tourism Industry's DNA
Awards will be presented in each of the following three areas:
- Innovation
- Collaboration
- Sustainability
You can nominate another business or apply on behalf of your own business. All nominees will be featured on TIAO’s website as a legacy to the resiliency of our industry. All finalists will be featured in a Globe & Mail full promotional page.
Key Dates:
- Nominations close August 31.
- Finalists will be announced on October 9.
- Winners will be announced in person at the Ontario Tourism Summit 2021 Gala Awards on October 27.

TIAO EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER ANNOUNCEMENT THAT ONTARIO IS PAUSING EXIT FROM THE ROADMAP TO REOPEN
TIAO is concerned over the government’s plan to pause the province’s exit from the Roadmap to Reopen. We have serious concerns for what this pause will mean for the recovery of hundreds of thousands of tourism and hospitality businesses across Ontario. There are important questions that remain unaddressed in the government’s plan to indefinitely pause the exit from the Roadmap to Reopen. For instance:
-
If and when new COVID-19 case levels fluctuate in the future due to new variants, can we expect the province to continually roll back reopening measures?
-
Will additional economic supports be introduced to support hardest hit businesses?
These and more, must be answered to provide tourism and hospitality businesses with some sense of certainty as to their eventual full reopening and their prospects for continued survival. We believe that given the financial impact of COVID-19 on our industry and our already slow and uneven recovery, the planned pause on full reopening is not only disappointing but potentially disastrous.
We believe that our business leaders should be heard and consulted on how to navigate recovery given this recent announcement as these measures will impact their future in Ontario.
TIAO PROVIDES FEEDBACK ON THE GREATER GOLDEN HORSESHOE TRANSPORTATION PLAN
Recently, TIAO was invited to provide feedback on the Greater Golden Horseshoe Transportation Plan within the Ministry of Transportation. Reliable, efficient, and safe transportation infrastructure is a high priority for our industry to facilitate the movement of visitors, our workers, and our suppliers. TIAO broadly supports the proposals in the GGH Transportation Plan, as it will deliver improved infrastructure and services to relieve congestion and offer expanded, more frequent, and more seamless transportation options—all of which benefit the tourism industry.
TIAO was pleased to offer feedback on ensuring equity for young and marginalized workers when using the transportation system. Improving transportation infrastructure to more quickly, easily, and safely move workers and visitors and contribute to more stable supply chains is therefore important to our industry’s economic recovery. Thus, we are particularly encouraged by the proposals outlined in the GGH Transportation Plan.

ONTARIO’S COVID-19 VACCINATION RATES
Currently, 83% of people 12+ in Ontario have received at least 1 dose of a vaccine and 76% of people 12+ in Ontario are fully vaccinated. While the rates of vaccination are continually increasing, we must continue to advocate that everyone that is eligible to receive a vaccine should get vaccinated.
Since last week, 32/34 Ontario Public Health Units have reached 70% of their population 12+ fully vaccinated.

Ontario Deploying Last Mile Strategy to Further Increase Vaccination Rates
Health
With over 82 per cent of eligible Ontarians aged 12 and over having received one dose of the vaccine and 75 per cent having received both doses, the government is continuing its last mile strategy to reach eligible individuals who have yet to receive a first or second dose. These latest efforts continue to make vaccines readily and conveniently available, especially in lower-vaccinated areas, and include proactively contacting individuals who have not booked their accelerated second dose appointment. “Vaccines are the best protection against COVID-19 and the Delta variant,” said Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “Working with our public health partners we are continuing make it easier and more convenient to receive the vaccine. If you haven’t been vaccinated yet and have questions, I encourage you to reach out to your pharmacy, family doctor or primary care provider.” To support the province’s last mile strategy, the province and public health units are focusing on smaller, community-based and easy-to-access settings for vaccinations. This includes mobile clinics and community-based pop-ups, dedicated clinic days for families with people with disabilities, and townhall meetings in multiple languages. In addition, the province is working with public health units to target areas with low vaccination rates, as identified by postal codes, to support localized vaccination strategies as well as targeted marketing by the province in these areas.

Travellers to Canada doubled after border reopened to Americans
CBC
The number of people crossing the land border into Canada more than doubled in the first week fully vaccinated Americans were once again allowed to enter the country for non-essential travel. According to Canadian government statistics, 218,732 non-commercial travellers entered Canada by land from Aug. 9-15. The number, which includes both Canadians and Americans, was a 111 per cent increase from 103,344 travellers the week before, when the border was still closed to Americans, and a nearly 200 per cent increase over the 74,562 people who crossed during that same week in 2020. It pales, however, in comparison to the 1.4 million travellers who entered Canada that week in 2019, before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
