2023 Ontario Auditor General Report Underscores the Economic Value and Potential of Ontario’s Tourism Industry at a Critical Time

TORONTO, ON (December 8, 2023) - The Tourism Industry Association of Ontario (TIAO) states that the Ontario Auditor General’s 2023 Annual Report brings important attention to Ontario’s tourism industry at a critical time, showcasing the opportunity ahead and the need for immediate, purposeful action by government in partnership with the industry.

TIAO is closely reviewing the Ontario Auditor General’s 2023 Annual Report, which includes value-for-money audits on tourism support programs, the Metropolitan Toronto Convention Centre and Ottawa Convention Centre, Science Centres, and the Travel Industry Council of Ontario.

Dr. Jessica Ng, Director of Policy and Government Affairs said, “The Auditor General’s Report echoes feedback shared by many of our members and stakeholders and includes issues that TIAO has previously raised in our 2022 State of the Ontario Tourism Industry Report, government submissions, and meetings with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport. TIAO supports the recommendations of the Auditor General and the need to better leverage existing tourism assets, partnerships, and resources to realize the full potential of Ontario’s tourism industry.”

TIAO has been actively urging the development of a forward-looking tourism growth strategy for Ontario and is committed to working closely with the Government to ensure that vital progress is made.

“Meetings and conventions, culinary experiences, Indigenous tourism, sport, live events, attractions, resource-based tourism – Ontario has it all. The Auditor General’s Report underscores the economic value of the tourism industry and the economic potential of tourism in Ontario when we have the right investments in place and a long-term tourism strategy to guide sustainable growth and development,” finished Dr. Ng.

The value-for-money audits can be found at the Ontario Auditor General’s website.
